When McLaren set out to build a grand tourer, it was not looking to introduce a softer 720S. It wanted to build a GT with true supercar performance, and the 2020 McLaren GT brings the goods. In this video, host Jethro Bovingdon takes us behind the wheel of McLaren’s new $210,000 mid-engine cruiser.
The 2020 McLaren GT boasts a 4.0-liter mid-mounted twin-turbo V-8 with 612 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. While that’s not a huge amount of power, the GT has an impressive weight-to-power ratio of 5.5 pounds per pony. McLaren estimates a 0-60 mph time of just over 3.0 seconds, and a top speed of 203 mph.
The GT is the the first vehicle in McLaren’s lineup to get the new MonoCell II-T carbon-fiber tub, with “T” representing “touring.” As we noted in our First Look, the GT’s suspension is similar to that of the 720S, but its spring rates are optimized for comfort and refinement, and adaptive shocks are controlled by proactive damping software. The result is a beautifully smooth, quiet ride you’d expect from a grand tourer.
“To drive this every day and have access to that crazy stuff when you want it, that is pretty appealing,” Bovingdon sums it up.
